  • Move the current image to the article on the original film, and upload a fairly-sized image of the TLBT logo to this page. More appropriate and better-balanced.
  • Figure how to use those main page templates more-developed wikias use, and apply them here.
  • Identify what links should be on the main page, and what should go to other pages.
  • Create a page for requesting featured articles per month.

[edit] Featured Images for each month.

Several other wikis which I have seen, namely the wiki for The Simpsons, not only have one article featured each month, but also one image featured each month. I think what we should do is come up with a few image policies (always being careful not to become so strict and cruel as Wikipedia's image policies) and then relate them to some guidelines for nominating images. I'll go and look over all images in Land Before Time Wiki, and create a list of them, so we know what we're looking for. Will-Girl 00:03, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Fair Use Rationales

In the first place, I think we should do fair use rationales in the images. Now, in the first place, as I said above, I do not want us to become as strict as Wikipedia's policies with non-free media - that is, if it doesn't have a source, a license, and a detailed fair use rationale, then the image must be deleted in one two three! No, I do not want that to happen. But all the same, I think we need to have these put in. Here are some benefits I've calculated would come of it:

  • If the copyright holders of The Land Before Time come and see this site, they will not as likely accuse it of infringing the copyright holds on the franchise.
  • It makes it look like we take pride in obeying fair use laws.
  • With my plans, it could help determine what images can be featured on the main pages each month.
  • A detailed fair use rationale, a license, and a source for the image also make the file look a little classier, in my view.

I have already put in a fair use rationale for Ducky's image (Image:Ducky.jpg!) and I think I'll create a fancy little rationale template like they have in Wikipedia. I'll be back and explain the rest of my plan when I'm done with that!!! Will-Girl 01:09, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Nominating images

As we have special criteria for nominating articles to be featured, we must also have special criteria for nominating images. This is what I thought we should include as the criteria:

  • While the image does not have to be free-use (as most images in a wikia focusing on the aspects of a copyrighted franchise are going to be non-free), an image should be designed for wiki-use. This means that the uploader of the image had to take it themselves. NOTE: This still counts for images derived from Wikipedia, so long as the person who originally uploaded the images there had taken them themselves.
  • The image must have a detailed fair use rationale provided if it is not a free or public domain-use image.
  • The image's resolution must be no lower than 300 pixels by 200 pixels.
  • The image must have a clear quality, and be very catchy in appearance.

If possible, I for some would be far happier to see the name of this wiki ""The Land Before TIme Wiki"" rather than simply ""Land Before Time Wiki"". What're other people's take on this? Clawandfang 15:42, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

I agree with you, however, I don't think it's possible to change the name of a wiki. If anyone could, it'd probably be User:Grand Moff Brian, since he creaed the wiki, but he's long since disappeared. Will might know; she's our most wiki-savvy user right now.Aabicus 01:57, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] New rules for Featured Articles.

All right, everyone. I see most people here aren't willing to follow the rules for Featured Article voting. They seem to want to just read through an article which has been nominated, and then vote for it, even though the rules say that much more needs to be done. I thought that the system I had written out would be easier than going a more Wikipedian-way. I see now, however, that that may be what needs to be done. Here is what I propose.

  1. A page is started, called Land Before Time Wiki:Featured article candidates.
  2. This page is to be used for listing any Good Article a user believes is of top quality. The users do not have to look through them and compare the Good Articles with each other to select the best in that category. They can look at the criteria for Featured Articles, and can decide from there if they personally think that this article meets the criteria. They then can nominate the article on this page.
  3. Other users may come and read through the article, and compare it to the criteria for FA class. They can then give their feedback, and if they have any suggestions, they can list them.
  4. After a given amount of time, an administrator looks over the majority of the discussion, as well as the article in question, and can decide whether or not to promote it.
  5. Once again, after an article is promoted to Featured Status, it can never be demoted again.
  6. The page we currently use for deciding the Featured Article of the month will no longer rely on what's in the Good Article category, but rather what's in the Featured Articles category.

Some of the benefits I can see in this new method are:

  • More than one article can possibly be promoted to Featured Status in one month.
  • The rules can be a little less complex than the ones we currently use, but still hold the same idea.
  • Because of this, the whole concept may appeal to a wider range of editors.
  • We can have more fun with our monthly nominations for the main page; such as nominations on a theme.

It certainly does. However, if you don't think that a nomination for Feature of the Month which is on the boards is a good idea for that month, you are expected to vote against it, and select one that you think is a better choice. The nice thing now is, though, that I can finally agree with you when you say "We can always nominate (a particular article) again next month"! Will-Girl 07:36, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Talking of Real World Things

Every editor seems to have their own way of saying "This thing is [description]. In the films they play this role." I, for example, use the phrase "In the Land Before Time world" or "In the world of the Land Before Time", but there are many other phrases, some I find to be just as good and some which I don't. In fact, one of my most frequent minor edits seems to be changing someone else's phrasing of this statement (possibly to their irritation, heh). I was wondering if it might be worth coming to a consensus on one or more "acceptable" ways to phrase this rather awkward statement. Opinions?Clawandfang 18:22, 6 January 2009 (UTC)

I'm not really sure about using one "acceptable" phrase; I just go along with anything which doesn't sound in-universe. My methods are complex to explain, but I believe in being in-universe to a degree when giving bio-related information on a character, for instance. But when comparing the term "sweet bubbles" to "grapes", I don't believe in saying "sweet bubbles mean grapes in dino talk", because that makes it sound like these characters really existed at one time, and that paleontologists or some scientists have actually figured out what terms the dinosaurs really used in their language/s. What I prefer saying is more like "grapes are referred to as 'sweet bubbles' by the characters". Does that help? Will-Girl 02:59, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
I guess, although what you seem to be saying is that you have your own "code" for dealing with this, and one which I find perfectly acceptable. At the moment featured pages link to a page which doesn't currently exist. I'm personally in two minds as to whether we need to make this page or whether simply merging it with the Featured Pages category page. Opinions? Clawandfang 21:23, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

The template has been cured of its problem. In the meantime, I hope you will familiarize yourself with the manuals of style for each type of article, which you may find at the bottom of the page linked here. Unfortunately, not all of the types of articles have pages yet, as I have not yet developed ones for species, locations, etc. But, reading through them, you might consider participating in the promotion of featured articles, and if you ever feel like adding content to articles in the wiki (I note that you mention on your userpage that you do not consider yourself a content contributor), then these pages will help you along with that exercise. I'd just like to point people in the direction of the category I've set up (or rather renamed really - we have had one misspelt with a single entry) at

I'm not a wiki expert but I think it would be something useful to have, not only to check what people think about articles which may not be wanted or simply not good enough to stay on if they're not improved. Also gives regular editors the power to suggest things for deletion, which can then be looked at by admins/beaureucrats. At the moment I add something to the discussion page of an article, and then someone else might add something else and then it'll just get left anyway. Not a particularly effective way of running thing in my opinion. Anyway, let me know what you think. I don't like introducing new bits because I always have this funny feeling that there's a good reason no one's bothered to do it before. Can't imagine what it might be though. It's taken me quite some time, but I finally think we have a wanted pages list (found under special pages) with which one can work with without losing all sense of grip on reality. I've got rid of the vast majority of entries which shouldn't be in it, and most of the pages listed there are now things geniunley requiring some attention, even if it is only to put a redirect in. Please please please will everyone be more careful in future whilst importing articles from Wikipedia. Either make sure the links not related to LBT are go to Wikipedia or remove them altogether. I certainly hope others will be more careful and take your advice; in the Steven Spielberg page, there are some red links from carrying the text over from Wikipedia, but I hope to have the rest of them cleaned up in a day or two. I've only just noticed the presence of these on the main page, and I'm a bit unhappy about them. They are, of course, perfectly legal as long as one actually owns the game and console in the first place, which would mean that they already know about it and (probably) have the ability to play. The people mainly benefitting from these links would be those willing to download an illegal copy of the game to play. I want rid of these links really, as that's not something we should be encouraging here I don't believe, but I'm just putting this up first in case anyone can come up with a good reason for them to stay.
