Pteranodon is a type of flying reptile depicted in The Land Before Time series. They, alongside other pterosaurs, are referred to as "flyers" in the series. Petrie, one of the main characters of the franchise as a whole, is occasionally called a Pteranodon by promotional media,[2] though he is frequently identified simply as a nondescript "pterodactyl" and occasionally as a Pterodactylus.[3][4]

Description[]

There are several Pteranodon variants, more than most other creatures, displayed throughout the series. Traits shared among all Pteranodon, regardless of variant or gender, are a large beak, a tapering crest behind their heads and, hence their colloquial name, winged forelimbs. They are also almost always depicted as bipedal when standing on the ground, able to stand erect like human beings. Most variants of Pteranodon are covered in filaments (technically called "pycnofibers"), with a collar of fuzz that surrounds the base of their necks, and display sexual dimorphism - adult males are larger and have longer crests than females. As with many other creatures in the series, Pteranodon come in a plethora of different colors, particularly shades of brown.

Etta and several incidental Pteranodon characters in the fourteenth movie, The Land Before Time XIV: Journey of the Brave, are outliers in these regards, being fairly uniform in color (either orange or yellow) with no obvious sexual dimorphism and no signs of pycnofibers. Another aberrant variant is Swooper's morph, which has a distinctive long, vaned tail.
